As the last rays of this year's dismal summer fade into the new
autumn season, interiors will be themed around contrasts of materials,
colours and textures. Linda Hindle, Granddaughter of Plumbs founder
Thomas Plumb explains how to create this autumn's hottest looks in your home?
Kelli Harman's interior design trends, like clothing trends, are constantly changing
and while it's easy enough to buy a few key pieces of clothing each
season, keeping up with the latest interior design fashions is not so
easy. But with such an exciting range of fabrics and soft furnishings
to choose from, the skilled craftsmen at Plumbs can reupholster
existing furniture, giving any home a seasonal revamp without the
expense of buying new.
As autumn is upon us, Linda Hindle, says Plumbs will be abandoning all
things plain in favour of patterned fabrics that incorporate natural
and autumnal shades, such as sage green and easy finishing colours such
as taupe and duck egg blue.
Talking about the latest style, Linda says: "The patterns in fabrics
are seeing a more repetitive design based on softer-edged geometrics,
such as flower heads. For upholstery in particular, pattern is edging its way in, with accessories such as cushions and foot stools making the most of bold textures with checks or small floral designs."
"Upholstery fabrics are also offering more choice than just the
obligatory linen or chenille look. Jacquard designs, silky textures and
even soft, crushed velvets are making an appearance. Upholstery shapes
themselves are softening. The classic, modern line will still be
popular but the choice will widen to include softer shapes that can be
interpreted in a modern or traditional way, offering casual,
comfortable seating."
"Styling has seen a resurgence of the '60s style, with colours
following suit. But the sharper, stronger colours of that period such
as orange, lime green, lemon and bright blue have become more muted and
exotic. Reds are becoming warmer and deeper; oranges have become
saffron and anaconda; and the greens are more pistachio and moorland.
If you are a lover of restoration, why not pay a visit to an auction
and look out for a retro piece of furniture to compliment this look."
"In the dining room, furniture has remained with designs that suit solid oak, and simple, well proportioned refectory style tables are
everywhere. The dark brown oak popular on the continent has passed us
by, in favour of warmer timbers, such as African and American walnut
and Far Eastern exotic woods, such as Macassar and solid teak - all of
which fit very well with the autumnal colours of the upholstery and the
fabrics."
"We are also seeing a new slant on paler oak, which is being teamed
with teak and walnut to make an interesting contrast. Oak is also being
used in its own right with a highly designed arts and crafts feel, for
a warm finish to the dining room."
Keeping up with the latest trends doesn't necessarily mean a total
overhaul of a rooms interior design. Plumbs can help add some autumnal
style by updating existing furniture. Offering a local service
throughout the UK, Plumbs' network of traditionally skilled craftsmen
have been restoring and reviving furniture for more than 45 years.
